Link Round-Up: Parents Sentenced to 27 years for Neglect Murder of 2-Year-Old Zaiden Javonovich

Zaiden Javonovich.

This morning, I awoke to an unexpected (and somewhat disappointing) update in a case I’ve followed for three years.

My previous blog coverage about the murder of Zaiden Javonovich can be found here.

You can also listen to my podcast episode about Zaiden here.

Both of Zaiden’s parents were originally charged with first-degree murder, two counts of child abuse, and one count of aggravated child endangerment for the starvation, abuse, and murder of her two-year-old son, as well as the abuse of her four-month-old son. Patrick was not the infant’s father.

Yesterday, Zaiden’s mother, 26-year-old Brandi Marchant, appeared in court, where she pleaded guilty to reduced charges of second-degree reckless murder, aggravated kidnapping, and child abuse. Last week, his father, 31-year-old Patrick Javonovich, pleaded guilty to the same charges.

News sources differ on whether or not the two were actually sentenced yet. Whether or not their sentences were handed down, both are expected to serve 322 months (not quite 27 years) in the Kansas prison system. When released, they will have to register as violent offenders.

It doesn’t seem like enough for the suffering Zaiden (and baby Tai) endured, but it’s what the prosecution team and the judge deemed appropriate. Here’s hoping neither Brandi nor Patrick ever reproduce again.
