The news is full to the brim of stories of injustice, of terror, of natural disasters, and the like. You’d be hard pressed to come up with a list of happy news stories on any given day, unless you’re partial to celebrity fluff pieces. Much easier to find are tales of woe, of heartbreak, of human loss and tragedy. None of these depressing news stories, however, hold a candle to the horror of stories of parents and caregivers causing harm to their children.
As parents, our job is to protect our children. To raise them to be happy, healthy people and contributing members of society. To educate them, to love them, to allow them to flourish despite the more-than-occasional bleakness of the cultural landscape of today. Our children have every opportunity to lead long, successful lives… as long as we, as parents and caregivers, uphold our end of the bargain.
This blog is about the people who have failed not only at caring for their children, but at displaying any sort of humanity toward the tiny people it is their implicit duty to protect.
I hope you have a strong stomach.
